Climate, water, global changes and natural systems

Who we are?

The Research Group on Climate, Water, Global Change and Natural Systems is made up of 22 researchers from different centers: Department of Geography and Territorial Planning of the University of Zaragoza, Center for Research in Agrifood Technology of the Government of Aragon, Higher Council of Scientific research, Universities of Santiago de Compostela and Ljubljana (Slovenia), as well as a large group of collaborators belonging to the State Meteorological Agency, Hydrographic Confederation of the Ebro, Geographic Institute of Aragon, University of Barcelona, University of Mäinz, University of Cambridge and University of Albany. The group was created officially in the year 2005, being the responsible researcher until 2017 the Regional Geographical Analysis Professor José María Cuadrat. Currently the head of the group is Professor Alfredo Ollero Ojeda.

What do we do?

Drawing on a previous experience of more than three decades, the group focuses its work on three topics: climate analysis, the dynamics of natural systems and surface hydrology.

SPREAD (Spanish PREcipitation At Daily scale)

Spanish PREcipitation At Daily scale (SPREAD) is a new daily gridded precipitation dataset for Spain. It covers the whole territory of peninsular Spain and Balearic and Canary Islands at a 5×5 kilometre spatial resolution. Daily precipitation was estimated for each point of the grid from 1950-01-01 to 2012-12-31 in peninsular Spain and from 1971-01-01 to 2012-12-31 in the Balearic and Canary Islands. The grid was built using a previously reconstructed station-based dataset using reddPrec package (https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/reddPrec). The observed precipitation information comprised 12,858 stations provided by Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET); Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAGRAMA); Meteorologic Service of Catalonia (METEOCAT); Navarra Government and several hydrological confederations.
